The Nair Newsline for September 2008

The Nair Newsline - September 2008

Bombs in dehli - At around 6 pm bombs blasted in G.K 1 M market. Atleast 22 people were killed. Says Rashmi Menon, relative and friend of Karuna Nair, who lives in dehli, “ Just today evening, I was telling Manish that we should go to G.K 1 M block market. That's where we normally shop for baby Arjun's stuff like diapers and all. This conversation was at 5 pm. He said no let's just go to the nearby mall. And at 6 pm , there were bomb blasts in that market. It was way too scary to think that we might have been there. I just pray that all terrorists should rot in hell and soon at that!!!!!!!!”. This incident occurred on 14 september 2008.

Baby shower - This isn't a baby shower where you get a shower of gifts for a baby, it's a shower of babies! Cos that's practically what's happening in the nair family. Ananya, Arjun, Reva, Annika, Adhvika, - pretty long list! Say hello to the tiniest form of cute! These little ones keep their parents pretty occupied- in the nicest way!

Organizing Onam - Most of you know what Onam is, if you don't then I'll spill the beans. Onam is the malayalam harvest festival. Now here in perth/gosnells, we had an onam celebration. Organizing it must have been tough, since some of the items were pretty good. Sonia Nair, member of the nair family, spent a lot of time doing just that , and the results were brilliant. She choreographed some of the dances and even decorated the stage with a pretty string of flowers, grass and sticks (she also arranged some flowers in pots). Her daughter Malavika was one of the dancers in an item too!

Vege Thins

An easy, quick, tasty batter helps you turn some veges into the perfect weeknight dinner .

Take some besan/chickpea flour. Mix with a little masala (your choice). Add water and make a thick paste. Dip thinly cut veges (if using potato/onion then fry first) into batter and deep fry in hot oil.

Arranged elegantly on a plate for a weekend dinner or eaten casually on weekdays, this is something yum, quick and easy! This recipe from Vinod Nair.

Choc Marshmallow

If you like sweet on sweet, then why not concoct these delicious choccy delights?
If you can make this easy choccy sauce, then it's real simple to make a delicious chocolate marshmallow.

Choccy Sauce
Take 100-150 grams of chocolate. Boil chocolate by holding over a boiling pan of water. ( don't let chocolate touch water). When the chocolate has melted and is hot, then you can use it for these marshmallow delights.

Stick each marshmallow on a toothpick and dip into choccy sauce. Turn over for 1 minute till fully coated. Take the toothpick out and put into fridge. Soon the chocolate would have hardened.
This delightful concoction will melt in your mouth.

This recipe from Karuna Nair.

Gulab Jam (un)

Create the original Indian sweet using this easy recipe.

Ingredients
2 cups milk powder
4 tbsp all purpose flour
½ tsp baking powder
Milk just enough to make the dough
Oil for frying

Mix the milk powder, all purpose flour and baking powder with just enough milk to make it a smooth dough. Don't overwork the dough. Make small balls out of them. Deep fry the balls in hot oil and drain. Finally, soak the fried gulab jamuns in the prepared sugar syrup.

For the Sugar syrup
2 cups sugar
2 cups water

Mix the sugar and the water and boil it for around 10-12 minutes. You can add some drops of rose essence to give it a slight flavour, if desired.

Tip: For a slightly more softer gulab jamuns, just heat the vessel with the gulab jamun in syrup for a couple of minutes. Serve hot/cold, as desired. This recipe from Renu Nair.

Art and craft
Christmas Baubles - Christmas is coming up, and it's not too early to prepare (well it is, but it may take a while to do since you can't make everything on one day!) So make these pretty baubles to decorate your tree (or house). Take some sponge tennis balls (about 3). Use any of these methods mentioned or create your own, to decorate them.

1.Paint the whole ball in one colour. Paint a little of it in a new colour. Do this many times, making each colour get a little less space to get a layered affect.

2.Paint whole ball pink. Paint parts of it silver. Using a toothbrush, spray silver glitter onto some parts of ball.

3.Paint the whole ball green. Put a little bit of paint (another colour) onto the ball and blow with a straw to create a dripped effect.

Once the balls have dried then poke them with a needle and tie a string through each one so you can hang them up.
Pencil Holders : String and beads- Take an old can. Thread some beads onto a long piece of wool. Wrap the wool round the can and either tie or hold down with tape or glue.
