What's up
Two birthdays, three parties- Aman Nair and close cousin Rishabh Mannar have their birthdays on the same day, same month. Their birth dates are exactly one year apart! So this year, on the double duo's birthday, which, by the way, is on November 8th, you'd expect two parties, But this time, there were three parties, all in the Nair (and extended) family. For Aman's other cousin Arjun, this year turning one, born just three days earlier than Aman & Rishabh, chose to host his party on the same date. While Arjun's family and friends celebrated at a resort in Dehli, Aman had a super fun day at the zoo checking out animals with his sister and parents, and Rishabh partied with his family and friends through the evening. So let's all wish Rishabh (4), Aman(3) and Arjun(1) a very very happy birthday!!!

W.A.G.S- Do you support wildlife? I sure hope so! Every time I pick up a book about an animal, what do I see? The phrase “many species of _____ are endangered”! People don't seem to care about wildlife anymore. W.A.G.S is a group made up by two children from the Nair family- Aman Nair and Karuna Nair. W.A.G.S stands for Wildlife. Animals. Greenery. Support.Help wildlife by not littering, buying eco-friendly products, (some companies test stuff on animals when it's not needed) spreading the word, planting trees and bushes (so that there will be homes for frogs, rabbits, badgers, moles and butterflies) and last but not least, if you know a wildlife support company, raise money and donate 50% or more of your earnings to wildlife.

§-An easy and fun recipe of one of your favorites
©- You may of heard of this, but it's still cool and new
¤- This is definitely a cool, scrumptious creation you have to try

Chocolate cups ¤
To make the case-
Take a small, clean balloon (that's been blown) Pour melted chocolate that's not runny, but not hard-just slightly gooey mixture- over the bottom half (not where it's been tied)of the balloon. Now freeze it in the fridge . When it's set, cut of the tie of the balloon. Empty the deflated balloon out of the chocolate case.
To make the handles-
In a tray, squeeze chocolate (the same that you used for the balloon) out of an icing bag into these shapes-
Freeze the shapes. Now heat up a small spoon very slightly and touch it to the two straight ends of the handle. They will begin to melt. 'Glue' a handle to one side of the cup. Now freeze till you serve it, so the handles will stick firmly.
Serve chocolate cups with sweet fillings- suggestions: Serve a trifle inside the cup by putting in custard, ice cream, small pieces of cake, strawberries. Top with whipped cream, strawberries and small chocolates (Smarties, Gems, boiled sweets, Morish nuts) You can also fill the cup with white chocolate mousse, chocolate mousse and some berries.

Palak Paneer Bhurji §

Finally in a pan, heat the butter & fry the onions until golden brown, add the tomato mixture & the cooked spinach mixture. Stir fry for 2 mins. Crush the cottage cheese & add to this. The World of Imagination

The Magic Rabbit
The following night, Beth lay absorbed in a dream about her meeting a thousand rabbits. But just as she was drifting of to sleep, a small creaking noise disturbed her. She woke up with a start to find herself on a wet patch of grass. Rolly sat next to her, his shiny black eyes gleaming. He started to hop off, and so Beth, though she was startled and frightened, followed him. They went along the top of a hill, and came to a huge cave. They both entered the cave and sat down. Beth was feeling very scared now. She whispered to Rolly “Do you know where we are going? I’m getting scared.” Rolly, who surprisingly understood what she said, answered “Don’t get scared. We’re visiting my city, Porietta.” Though Beth felt somewhat better, she felt sad at the thought of her parents worrying over her absence. Rolly, as if reading her mind, said “You will be there at home, but your real self will be here. I know you do not understand, but just trust me.” Just then a bell rang and the mouth of the cave opened. A beautiful city, lit up with lights was what Beth saw. Two big rabbits, about her parent’s size, stood on the neat fields holding bright purple torches. “Hello Rolly” they both shouted and they hugged him. “You must be Beth” said the one who looked a female. She wore a yellow skirt and red top, and was very pretty. “Rolly has told us all about you” said the other one. He had specs and wore a green nightshirt and purple shorts. “Are you Rolly’s parents?” she asked anxiously. “Why, yes my dear. I’m Sylvia and he’s Bob” said the female one. “We’d better go back to the house and have some sleep. You can meet your friends tomorrow, and you’d better show Beth around” Bob said quickly. They soon reached a tidy little cottage. Bob took her to a small room and gave her a bed to sleep in. Soon she was dreaming again.
Beth woke up to find everyone up and about. Sylvia was chopping vegetables; Bob was reading the newspaper. Rolly was eating porrietan toast. Bob showed her the bathroom; she washed and then joined Rolly at breakfast. As they munched the toast Rolly told her “Princess Stella has organised a feast this evening. My friends, our parents , you and I are to attend. You’ll be told everything today and you can explore too.” Beth did not reply but wondered who Princess Stella was and whether she’d like Beth. She’d heard stories of grand princesses who were cruel and selfish. She did not know that Porietta was an animal city; she thought Sylvia and Bob had owners and Rolly had been born to them. After that Sylvia gave her a bright red and yellow gown with scarlet roses made of velvet to wear. She set off with Rolly, who was now as tall as her. They met Sly Squirrel and Brownie Bear on the way. The four of them sat down on a long red bench. Sly Squirrel whispered to Rolly “Hi Rolls, is this your friend Beth?” “Yes Sly. Before playing, we’d better explain it to her; otherwise she’ll sit without understanding it and won’t be able to do anything” was Rolly’s reply. “Explain what to me?” asked Beth, who was wondering at how a squirrel could be as big as herself. “You’ll find out soon enough” said Brownie. Sly mumbled “Rolls, she’ll know everything at the feast. Let’s go to the park!’ “Alright” muttered Rolly. Meanwhile, Beth was in a different world, wishing she could meet the animal’s owners, who according to her, existed, and wondering if Brownie Bear was trained.

Super Survey
This month we interview Rashmi Menon about supporting wildlife.

1.Do you say people should support wildlife more?
Yes, I do. I don't want my son to look at animals just in picture books, I want him to see them for real.

2.Do you know any groups that support wildlife (other than W.A.G.S)?
I've heard of PETA.

3.What small contribution can everyone give to wildlife?
I think as an individual the least we can do is stop pollution. Give a safe and healthy environment to all wildlife.

4.If you had a wildlife support group, what changes would you make to save wildlife?
That animals should have a free, open environment, not live in cages or even small enclosures. Lots of countries have this law but not India.

5.Do you have a message about wildlife support?
If you plant more trees, that will give homes to wildlife like badgers, moles, butterflies and birds. Also, if you conserve energy by using cars less or using bicycles(why not walk, too), that will help stop pollution.

What's Up

Navratri - The traditional festival of nine nights was celebrated in splendor at the Hindu Centre of WA. The temple was decorated the night before, and everyday there was some celebration. There were a few prayers, followed by cultural programs (dances, recitals) and finished with the guest having prasad or food that has been blessed by gods. On the last day of Navratri, statues of gods were carried around the temple. The last day finished with a priest shooting out arrows made of cardboard (if you caught them, it was supposed to bring you good luck).

Temple to Temple- Sudha and Ravindranathan Nair had a trip to the south of India. They went through Kerala and Tamilnadu, visiting many temples. They went on what I sometimes like to call a long temple hunt.

Sprinkler Spray- According to Karuna Nair, sprinklers aren't just pipes that water your garden. She says “When we first turned the sprinkler on, it looked just beautiful. It had four bits of water gushing out. Two sprayed down on the ground, whirling around. The other two gushed into the air, criss crossing each other as they went. It truly did look like their was a marvellous fountain in our backyard.”

Ras Malai-
Soft sweet balls in a sweet milk syrup.
Ingredients- 1.5 ltrs Milk, 1.5 cups sugar, 2 tbsp Vinegar, 8-10 Pistachios, 3 cups Water
Method: Boil 1ltr of milk & when it reaches the boiling point, add the vinegar & stir. Now strain this mixture & separate the whey. (TIP:Do not throw away the whey- you can use it to knead the dough for roti- your rotis will be softer). Once it is strained well & the cheese is completely dry- beat it in the mixer for 1 whole minute until it becomes a soft dough. Now shape them into small balls & flatten them a little. In a cooker add 3 cups of water to 1 cup of sugar & put these balls in it & cook until you hear one whistle. Strain the water & keep aside. Meanwhile boil the remaining milk & sugar until it reduces a little, then add the cooked cheese into this mixture & let it boil for 2 mins. Decorate with finely chopped pitachios & serve.
NOTE:If you want to make Ras Gulla then use this recipe but leave the balls in the sugar syrup instead of making a syrup with milk.
This recipe from Rashmi Menon.

Stuffed Potatoes-
Yummy potatoes filled up with snacks. Very very easy to make and is delicious to eat.
Ingredients- Potatoes (big ones), veges, corn, cheese.
Take a potato and poke 3 holes in lightly with a fork. Then cook it in the microwave for 1 ½ mins . Once cooked, cut the potato into two (make one half small and the other big) Take the big half and scoop out some of the inside of the potato. Now grate some raw veges or cook some veges and then cut them. Grate some cheese and mix into the veges. Sprinkle into the potato half and add some cooked corn for some sweet taste. Don't fill up the potato or you won't be able to cover it. Take some of the potato mash that you scooped out and cover fillings with it.Gently press down so that potato mash won't fall out before you eat it.
You can fill your potato with anything you like, but you have to cook it unless it can be eaten raw.

Trick- Don't tell whoever's going to eat it that it's been filled so that when they have it, they'll be surprised at how different it tastes!
This recipe from Karuna Nair.

Super Survey

This month we are interviewing Raji and CC Menon about school. If you can be interviewed please send an email to karunanair99@gmail.com or write INTERVIEW when you post a comment on the nair newsline.

Ques1. What do you think about Australian schools having two weeks holiday after each term and 1 ½ months holiday after a year and Indian schools having only 2 weeks for Diwali and two months after each year?

Ans1. The system of giving two weeks holiday a term and 1 ½ months after a year is good. This reduces the boredom for the children. The students return to school refreshed.

Ques2. If you were a principal of a school, what topics would you choose and what ways to teach them (books, worksheets, etc)?

Ans2. We would choose subjects like Computer Science, Mathematics, Basic Science, General Knowledge and Languages. These subjects should be taught through books, practical work sheets and visits to industries or factories relevant to the subject being taught.

Ques3. Do you think schools should have extra activities (plays, shows, trips)?

Ans3. Extra activities like plays, shows and trips should be included. The students should participate and soon after, submit an evaluation of what happened.

Ques4. When you went to school what activities, holidays, exams and subjects did you have?

Ans4.In our days we had Science, Maths, General Knowledge and Languages. The stress was more on rote learning than through practicals. So students fared well in theories with pathetic performance in practicals. Extra activities were less in those days. We used to have 3 exams in a year- Quarterly, Half yearly, and Final.

The Magic Rabbit - By Karuna Nair

It was a bright, beautiful morning. The April sun shone brightly in every nook and cranny. The daffodils and daisies spread their tiny golden petals. As young Beth gazed at the beautiful scene from her balcony, she spotted a tiny white rabbit lying limp somewhere near her own garden. She was a pretty girl of about 9, with long blond hair so straight you could count it. She had rosy cheeks and loved animals. Beth didn’t have her own pets, but each day she would run down and play with her furry friends. When she saw the rabbit she ran right down and sat next to it. Its tiny white body was weak and its leg was limp. It tried to get up but the result was that it fell down again. Beth picked up the rabbit gently and said “I’d better show Mummy.” She took the weak little rabbit to her mother who was in the garden, reading. Beth told her how she had found it and asked if there was any way to help it. Her mother replied “You’ll have to look after it, because what it needs is some food and water.” Beth was so happy that all she managed to do was pick up the rabbit and take it upstairs. She got out a basket and put a cushion in it. She popped the rabbit in it and fetched some carrots and water. Beth then took the rabbit and gave it a wash. After that all she could do was just sigh and whisper “I’ll name you Rolly.”

As the weeks slipped by, Rolly and Beth grew to love each other very much. Their days were full of fun and frolic; they played with each other and met other friends all the time. Now, Rolly was actually a magic rabbit. He belonged to a world called Porietta. This world was beautiful, with neat little cottages in rows and purple and yellow fields marked out neatly. You will find out about Porietta soon enough, but you need to know this first. Everyday, when Beth was fast asleep, Rolly would go to Porietta and spend the night with his friends having wonderful adventures and playing games. He wished and wished that Beth could come with him. But the queen of Porietta, (there is no king) a sharp tongued cat called Queen Penelope, was against any humans in her land. As Rolly said, if you dared to even talk about humans in front of her, you’d be banished into Anglia or Stalbia, the neighbouring cities of Porietta. One day, he and his friends made a plan on how to get rid of Queen Penelope. Her daughter, a sweet kitten named Stella, would then be elected. They gave the Queen an invitation for a party at Brietta, a fine hotel. There, once the queen was settled, they gave her a glass of iced tea, in which Sly Squirrel had mixed poison. She drank it and fell unconscious, and soon died. Stella Kitten had always hated her mother, who had locked her in a tower and given her only food and water. She gave Rolly and his friends a sum of 1000 porrets, the currency of Porietta. She also granted permission for Beth to visit with Rolly.

Art and Craft

This month I share some stuff I've tried myself- Karuna Nair.

Papier Mache

Learn the basics
Papier mache dough: Take just enough dough to make a thick paste. Tear the newspaper into small strips and mix into a little dough. Pour water and knead the paper dough fully. As you put more newspaper, put a little more dough. Add a few pinches of water once in a while. Knead fully and then use.

What I've made

Tiny gift
Take some cardboard and cut out a small square. Cover up both sides in newspaper or tissue(dipped in glue). Leave to dry. Using water colour or acrylic paint (use only liquid paint, not paint cakes), cover the whole thing in paint. Use multiple colours if desired. When dried, put a bow on top. Wrap it in a small piece of wrapping paper and tie it so when receiver opens it up, he/she will see a mini gift inside!

I scream!
Using cardboard, paint and tissue/newspaper, make a small ice-cream. Do not put tissue/newspaper on back of cardboard unless desired. Attach a tag with this message “Ice cream (I scream) Happy Birthday!”

Your Initial means a lot
Out of cardboard, cut out a letter (the initial of the receiver). Cover it in tissue/ newspaper and paint. Draw designs or write a message once the paint has dried. Make the letter at least as big as a tissue box so you can write/draw properly on it. TIP: If you make two letters for an anniversary, cut and paint a big heart and glue letters inside.

Cards

Key Chain Card
Cut out a long strip of coloured card paper. Fold in half and keep aside (Your strip should be thick card- you can use any type for the shaped piece) To make the shaped piece, cut out many of these shapes.(Trace them or use this aproximate size- after all this is a tiny card) Glue them all together. (tip: use different colour card for the strip and the shaped piece) Now write and draw what you want on the pieces. Poke a hole on the side of the shaped piece. Now poke a hole on the front half of the strip card. Tie them together with string and... Voila! You have a perfect little card!

The Nair Newsline for September 2008

The Nair Newsline - September 2008

Bombs in dehli - At around 6 pm bombs blasted in G.K 1 M market. Atleast 22 people were killed. Says Rashmi Menon, relative and friend of Karuna Nair, who lives in dehli, “ Just today evening, I was telling Manish that we should go to G.K 1 M block market. That's where we normally shop for baby Arjun's stuff like diapers and all. This conversation was at 5 pm. He said no let's just go to the nearby mall. And at 6 pm , there were bomb blasts in that market. It was way too scary to think that we might have been there. I just pray that all terrorists should rot in hell and soon at that!!!!!!!!”. This incident occurred on 14 september 2008.

Baby shower - This isn't a baby shower where you get a shower of gifts for a baby, it's a shower of babies! Cos that's practically what's happening in the nair family. Ananya, Arjun, Reva, Annika, Adhvika, - pretty long list! Say hello to the tiniest form of cute! These little ones keep their parents pretty occupied- in the nicest way!

Organizing Onam - Most of you know what Onam is, if you don't then I'll spill the beans. Onam is the malayalam harvest festival. Now here in perth/gosnells, we had an onam celebration. Organizing it must have been tough, since some of the items were pretty good. Sonia Nair, member of the nair family, spent a lot of time doing just that , and the results were brilliant. She choreographed some of the dances and even decorated the stage with a pretty string of flowers, grass and sticks (she also arranged some flowers in pots). Her daughter Malavika was one of the dancers in an item too!

Vege Thins

An easy, quick, tasty batter helps you turn some veges into the perfect weeknight dinner .

Take some besan/chickpea flour. Mix with a little masala (your choice). Add water and make a thick paste. Dip thinly cut veges (if using potato/onion then fry first) into batter and deep fry in hot oil.

Arranged elegantly on a plate for a weekend dinner or eaten casually on weekdays, this is something yum, quick and easy! This recipe from Vinod Nair.

Choc Marshmallow

If you like sweet on sweet, then why not concoct these delicious choccy delights?
If you can make this easy choccy sauce, then it's real simple to make a delicious chocolate marshmallow.

Choccy Sauce
Take 100-150 grams of chocolate. Boil chocolate by holding over a boiling pan of water. ( don't let chocolate touch water). When the chocolate has melted and is hot, then you can use it for these marshmallow delights.

Stick each marshmallow on a toothpick and dip into choccy sauce. Turn over for 1 minute till fully coated. Take the toothpick out and put into fridge. Soon the chocolate would have hardened.
This delightful concoction will melt in your mouth.

This recipe from Karuna Nair.

Gulab Jam (un)

Create the original Indian sweet using this easy recipe.

Ingredients
2 cups milk powder
4 tbsp all purpose flour
½ tsp baking powder
Milk just enough to make the dough
Oil for frying

Mix the milk powder, all purpose flour and baking powder with just enough milk to make it a smooth dough. Don't overwork the dough. Make small balls out of them. Deep fry the balls in hot oil and drain. Finally, soak the fried gulab jamuns in the prepared sugar syrup.

For the Sugar syrup
2 cups sugar
2 cups water

Mix the sugar and the water and boil it for around 10-12 minutes. You can add some drops of rose essence to give it a slight flavour, if desired.

Tip: For a slightly more softer gulab jamuns, just heat the vessel with the gulab jamun in syrup for a couple of minutes. Serve hot/cold, as desired. This recipe from Renu Nair.

Christmas Baubles - Christmas is coming up, and it's not too early to prepare (well it is, but it may take a while to do since you can't make everything on one day!) So make these pretty baubles to decorate your tree (or house). Take some sponge tennis balls (about 3). Use any of these methods mentioned or create your own, to decorate them.

1.Paint the whole ball in one colour. Paint a little of it in a new colour. Do this many times, making each colour get a little less space to get a layered affect.

2.Paint whole ball pink. Paint parts of it silver. Using a toothbrush, spray silver glitter onto some parts of ball.

3.Paint the whole ball green. Put a little bit of paint (another colour) onto the ball and blow with a straw to create a dripped effect.

Once the balls have dried then poke them with a needle and tie a string through each one so you can hang them up.
Pencil Holders : String and beads- Take an old can. Thread some beads onto a long piece of wool. Wrap the wool round the can and either tie or hold down with tape or glue.

Hardly any studies
Do you think that nowadays kids get an overload of studies? Well, think again! At RBA, it’s exactly the opposite for some 4th Standard students. Says Karuna Nair, a member of the Nair family “We’ve not done many studies since a long time. We’ve had lots of extra curricular activities since January 2008.” Seems like a burst of fun has overcome this school since the New Year arrived. The 4th standard has made a minitiaure city from scrap and even had plays and an exhibition about stories! Up and coming is a play on the story Ali Baba & the 40 thieves. Watch it at 6:00 pm, 8th March 08 at Mahavir English Medium School. So much for studying, eh!

Are you bored out of your socks? Well here's some interesting things to do.
